About BotaniBec Plants
-
BotaniBec specializes in handcrafted kokedamas and carefully curated orchid arrangements designed for modern indoor living. Each piece is thoughtfully created to bring balance, natural beauty, and a calming botanical presence into homes, studios, and workspaces.
-
Kokedama is a traditional Japanese planting technique where a plant’s roots are wrapped in soil and covered with moss, forming a natural moss ball instead of using a pot. Kokedamas are often displayed on plates, wooden stands, or suspended in the air, creating a sculptural piece of living plant art.
-
Kokedama works best with indoor plants that are resilient and able to adapt to a moss-ball root environment.
At BotaniBec, the plants used in our kokedama designs are carefully selected based on experience and testing to ensure they can thrive in this style of planting. Plants that are too delicate or unsuitable for indoor conditions are not used.
You can explore the current kokedama collection in our Shop.

cat-friendly
-
Many kokedama plants can be suitable for homes with cats, especially when using pet-safe plant varieties such as Spider Plants, Calatheas, Peperomias and Orchids.
However, even with non-toxic plants, we recommend discouraging pets from chewing or eating plants.
-
A plant is generally considered cat-friendly when it is listed as non-toxic to cats according to recognised resources such as the ASPCA plant database.
This means the plant is unlikely to cause serious harm if a cat nibbles on it.

Plant care
-
To water a kokedama, soak the moss ball in a bowl of water for about 10-15 minutes until it feels fully saturated. After soaking, gently squeeze out excess water and allow it to drain before placing it back on a plate or stand.
-
Most indoor kokedama plants need watering approximately every 5–7 days, depending on the environment, temperature, and humidity. A simple way to check is to lift the moss ball, if it feels light, it’s time to water.
-
Kokedama plants prefer bright, indirect light. A spot near a window with soft natural light is ideal. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can dry out the moss too quickly.
-
Good ventilation is important to keep the moss ball healthy and prevent excess moisture buildup. Placing your kokedama on a wooden stand or elevated surface can help improve airflow around the moss ball while also creating a beautiful display.
-
Orchids prefer bright, indirect light and a well-ventilated space.
When watering, avoid following a strict schedule, as different environments affect how quickly the plant dries. A general guideline is about every two weeks, but always check the roots first.
If the roots appear silvery or white, it’s time to water. If they are still green, the plant is still hydrated. When watering, soak thoroughly and allow the plant to dry before watering again. Orchids generally prefer to be slightly dry rather than constantly wet.

-
One of the most common reasons orchids struggle is overwatering. Orchids prefer to dry slightly between watering, and constantly wet roots can lead to root rot.
Light is another key factor. Orchids need bright, indirect light to stay healthy and produce blooms. Without enough light, the plant may survive but is less likely to flower.
By allowing the roots to dry slightly between watering and placing the plant in a bright spot, orchids can thrive indoors.
